This tour is fully accommodated and includes 2 nights at Fraser Island Resort.

Itinerary

Day 1: Brisbane Line, HMAS Diamantina, Archerfield, Gold Coast Hinterland (LD)

Depart our Brisbane rendezvous point from 07:00hrs. Today we explore the WWII heritage of the Brisbane Line and its surrounds. We'll visit General Douglas Macarthur's Brisbane HQ, and tour one of the last remaining Australian Naval Vessels which served in WWII. We revisit the dark days of WWII when we discover the strange goings-on at the water-filled quarry at the former Archerfield RAAF Base before we continue on to the magnificent Gold Coast Hinterland for dinner and our night's accommodation.

Day 2: Canungra, Lowood, Toowoomba (BLD)

Today we visit the famous Kokoda Barracks in Canungra, home to the Army Intelligence Wing and the Land Warfare Centre (Formerly the Jungle Training Centre). Here we will visit the Vietnam memorial as well as the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam memorial grove. We are treated to a rare and memorable insight into the generally unknown history of Army intelligence operations. After a short lunch stop we explore the first of the secret bunkers we will see on our journey, the Lowood RAAF complex. Tour the outstanding Milne Bay Military Museum and indulge in a rare visit to aviation icon Lynnette Zuccolli's Toowoomba warbirds collection. We move on to our accommodation in time for dinner and a well-earned rest after a hectic and action packed second day.

Day 3: Toowoomba, Oakey, Miles, Kowguran (BLD)

We depart Toowoomba in the morning and travel a short distance to the Oakey Army Aviation Centre. A very special visit to the Museum of Australian Army Flying where we see Army Flying Corps aircraft from WWI through to the recently retired UH-1H Iroquois helicopter - the famous Vietnam-era "Huey". After lunch at Oakey, it's back onto the bus for a leisurely journey to the historic township of Miles and its pioneer village. A short bus journey sees us arrive at the unique Possum Park, AKA RAAF Central Reserve Kowguran. Our hosts David and Julie have converted the WWII-era ammunition dumps into comfortable accommodation. Here we will be staying in a fully upgraded underground WWII bunker or troop train carriage cabin. We have the rest of the day to explore the bunkers and the Possum Park military displays.

Before we know it we are enjoying the fresh sea-air on the catamaran en route to Fraser Island. Upon making landfall, we travel to our home for the next two nights, the world renowned Kingfisher Bay Resort. After a leisurely dinner in one of the Resort's fine restaurants, it's time for a briefing on the Military Heritage of Fraser Island followed by a well-earned rest after a long day.

Day 5: Fraser Island, SS Maheno, Z Force Base, Lake Mckenzie (BLD)

Today... Our Mission, Should We Choose To Accept It, Is To Immerse Ourselves In The Secret Operations Of The Wartime Services Reconnaissance Department And The Sharp end of the special operations spear, Z-Special Unit. Our guide for the Fraser Island Mission is Ian Bauer, a long-time Expert in all things Z-Special Unit. Today we will travel by 4WD coach to the wreck of the SS Maheno and to beautiful Lake McKenzie and learn of their links with Z Special Unit. Ian will then give us a guided tour of the Z Force Base on the Island, the Fraser Commando School. Tonight after dinner, Ian lets us in on more Fraser Island "Z" secrets with an exclusive viewing of the ultra-rare Fraser Commando School colour training films where we see the sites we have just visited as they were during Z Special Unit Training in 1945.

We also explore the Mavis Banks Museum before we bid farewell to Rob and continue on to Caloundra and the Queensland Air Museum. At the QAM, we see military and civilian aircraft including several British types which are rare to see in Australia. Then it's on to our Sunshine Coast accommodation.
